Top Rung Madhav Mehra, the first Asian to be elected Chairman, World Quality Council in conversation with Radhuka Sachdev
My biggest challenge was to prove that my years in the government sector could be put the Indian Railways in 1988. Earlier, I had to work within certain boundaries. Now there's a complete sense of ownership. I found from the early experience that training is the only way to empower people. I started my career through quality - not just in management and services but also in environment protection and corporate governance. Its perhaps for the first time that businesses have acquired the will and technology to switch to eco-friendly products and services.
One of the lessons of the catastrophic events of September 11is to make globalisation work for all, not just the 'haves'. Its impossible to achieve this objective unless our businesses become more transparent, accountable and responsible to the entire world populace. Indeed, the power of business is so great today that corporates can become potent instruments of national, economic and social transformation. Our endeavour through the World Quality Council, UK is to educate corporations about corporate governance.
Past: Director, Ministry of Indian Railways
Present: (a) Chairman, World Quality Council, UK (b) President, World Council for Corporate Governance, UK (c) President, World Environment Foundation.
Future: Continue to create a synergy to achieve intended transformations
Strengths: Persistence
Weakness: Cannot stand incompetence
Wisdom: The mistake that you make of defending a previous mistake inhibits growth and progress.
Hobby: Taking a stroll through Regent's Paark.
