Palampur to become DAVOS of India, says Dr. Madhav Mehra
5th World Congress on Environment Management will again be held at SM Convention Centre Palampur from 13th to 15th June, 2003 and some of the World’s most renowned personalities in the environment Foundation (WEF), Chairman World Quality Council & President World Council for Corporate Governance. The theme of the Congress is “Changing life style and production processes for a cleaner Environment and spirituality for Behavioural Changes”. 20 countries have already confirmed participation in it. The conference is expected to have over 400 business leaders, policy makers and opinion leaders coverage at Palampur.
Dr. Mehra added that he is currently negotiating with several international networks to get their participation for this event. He plans to turn Palampur into DAVOS of India. DAVOS is a place in Switzerland where world leaders come for international conferences for each year organized by World Economic Forum. He said that he has been trying to promote Palampur internationally but the absence of proper airport is the main hurdle.
Dr. Madhav Mehra told that SM Charitable trust which was founded by him in the name of his mother, has sent a proposal to the Chief Minister, H.P. on Oct 8, 2001 for rural transformation of Himachal Pradesh but the State has done little about.
The institute of Directors is shortly setting up an “International Institute of Management and Governance” at SM Convention Centre Palampur. IOD is already conducting such courses in the metro towns. Palampur will host the one week and longer in house courses centrally at Palampur, soon starting with basic and advance courses for corporate directors.
The current IOD’s “Directors’ Training Calendar” covers subject like ‘Enhancing Effectiveness of Corporate Boards’ ‘role of non executive directors’’ Corporate social and Environmental Responsibilities’ ‘Balanced Score Cards’ ‘Six Sigma for Directors’ ‘CRM for Directors’ and so on.
In his recent interview with the BBC World, he advised corporate that sustainability has to be the ultimate end game of the business and they must look beyond immediate profits for the shareholders.
He further added the SM Charitable Trust is running hospitals and family Welfare Centre and Health and Environment Awareness Melas and Programmes at Delhi and other centers. Dr. Mehra said that the trust has planned to take on major ‘Poverty Alleviation’ projects by bringing about sustainable livelihoods, health counseling and empowering women through training in spread out village of HP.
