Quality Begins At the Top
Liberalisation has opened up new vistas for Indian and exposed them to severe cutthroat competition - a consequence characterised by state-of-the-art technology, high operational productivity and the indefatigable appetite of consumers on the prowl for new and optimum quality products at lower prices. Against this backdrop, entrepreneurs are beginning to take big, albeit, calculated risks so as to become globally competitive and internally viable. In an effort to promote total quality management (TQM) culture amongst top management echelons, the institute of Directors (IOD) hosted a programme, 'Quality for Directors', in Bombay, recently. Dr Madhav Mehra, president of IOD and Worldwide Quality Management Network spoke of the fast-paced changes taking place in the corporate world due to advanced information technology (IT) that cut cross all barriers. To withstand this onslaught, he said, "Corporate houses will have to go in for effective up gradation of technology, enhancement of potentialities of personnel and, above all, be responsive to the needs and aspirations of consumers. He emphasised that the TQM concept was, a preventive measure against intrinsic and extrinsic obsolescence. On the one hand, it involved imparting training, empowering personnel and providing sophisticated equipment to work on, and, on the other, total involvement of the top management in every operational aspect.
