Speaking about the need to bring about drastic change to counter the disaster waiting to happen, Dr. Madhav Mehra, president of the World Council for Corporate Governance (WCFCG), UK, said that Indian businesses much start thinking about implementing green initiatives. “India’s carbon footprint of six tonnes per person per year, is still behind that of major developing and developed countries. And the change much start now,” he added. Initiating proactive methods to combat climate change, he emphasized on the need to decrease the pressure on natural resources by opting for a austere lifestyle, creating zero waste, turning to renewable, innovating business models to facilitate preserving natural resources, among others. “We must change the way we do things with corporates initiating the change. The balance sheet of a company must include natural and social capital along with financial capital. Eco tax must co-exist with income tax, allowing for the person responsible for pollution to be burdened with additional tax, “added Mr. Mehra. The proactive initiative with the World Environment Foundation, Institute of Directors and Maini Group (Reva Car) is organizing a signature campaign in the City. The banner will do the rounds of the City in the Reva car for a week and get Bengalureans to give their support for the cause of the environment.
