This World Environment Day, There’s an opportunity for you to get out and be part of the movement against climate change. The World Environment Foundation (WEF), a Delhi- based NGO, is starting a human chain to create more awareness about climate change. “We need a model to combat global climate change, which has been under discussion for several years. There must be better collaboration between the government. NGO’s and businesses, “says lt. Gen. J.S. Alhuwalia, Director General, WEF. The WEF model is an eleven-point initiative called PROACTIVATE, which spells out each of the step that the WEF works towards to prevent climate change (see Box). “We need people to be aware of how our resources are utilized and what alternatives are available to us when they run out, ” says Alhuwalia. One way, he says is to get citizens to participate in forming a human chain, which will start in Bangalore. “The WEF, in association with the Institute of Directors, Bangalore chapter, the Maini Group and the Bangalore management association (BMA), has formed a Citizen Forum under the leadership of Justice M N Vekatachaliah, and is organizing a global human chain. The governor of Karnataka will presides over the event, and have the support of the eminent Bangaloreans like Chetan, Maini. Kiran Mazumdar, Gopinath,” says Ahluwalia, adding that there will also be an environment pledging with a signature campaign. “We’re hoping that Bangaloreans, and most importantly students will get involved. What’s most needed right now is awareness of climate change and what can be done to combat it,” says Ahluwalia, adding that the chain will continue in Chennai, Hyderabad, other places in India and London.
